Hanalei Bay is large bay in northern Kauai in Hawaii. The town of Hanalei stands on the coast. It is also the name of a city, bay, beach, river, valley and lookout. The valley of Hanalei is surrounded by majestic mountains. A mile wide and 6 miles long, it the home of the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge.
The majority of Hawaii’s entire taro is grown here. Taro is used to make poi and numerous other food products that were and still are the mainstay of many Hawaiian's diet. The fields are constantly irrigated with water and are grown in patches giving the valley a patchwork quilt look.
The entire Hanalei Bay is ringed with a white sand beach. The surrounding mountains embrace this bay and, in the early morning when the ocean is like glass, it mirrors the beauty of the cliffs.
The surfing in this area is famous and many locals as well as tourist visit the area. The Hanalei Pier is located on the east side of the long beach near where the Hanalei River enters the ocean.
One of only seven beaches in Kauai with a lifeguard station, this long crescent beach encircles the bay.
DIRECTIONS:
Take Highway 560 west toward Hanalei from Princeville. Turn right on Aku. This road ends at Weke Road. Go right ro Hanalei Beach Park or left to Wai'oli Beach Park.
