Given below is a list of the best beaches in Hawaii, discussed
a slightly different standpoint, for the benefit of the visitors. To cover
Hawaiian vacation rentals such that they are conveniently located a beach;
at least one beach from each of the six major islands is mentioned.
For even further
convenience, the names of the beaches are in alphabetical order, island-wise.
There is also an intentional mention of several, less well-known beaches
that can be considered ‘real gems’. This list includes:
1) Anaehoomalu Bay, Waikoloa Beach, Big Island: This beach is adjacent to
the Waikoloa Beach Marriott (formerly called Outrigger Waikoloa Beach) on
the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. Beautifully landscaped walking paths,
past ancient Hawaiian fishponds, golden sand, and swaying palm trees are
the attractive features of the beach area.
2) Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Kau District, Big Island: This is a black sand
beach, famous for a sanctuary for green sea turtles. They can often be seen
laying in the sand. The opportunity of snorkeling and swimming, on the south
coast, is the unique offer of this beach. But, one has to be careful about
the frequent bad riptide, which makes the waves here highly unpredictable.
3) Lumahai Beach, North Shore, Kauai: It was on this is the beach that much
of the motion picture - ‘South Pacific’ - was filmed. The exotic
views of the beach, with waves crashing against the nearby rocks are exceptional
even though the path down to the beach is difficult to find and the walk
down can be a little slippery.
4) Salt Pond Beach Park, Hanapepe, Kauai: A great place for family gatherings,
this beach is located conveniently near Hawaii accommodation, and has many
pavilions for eating and a lot of flat space for playing games. The bright
and warm sun and the relatively calm water are a big plus here. You can hope
to see Hawaiians making salt in the natural salt pond, during the summer
months. Containers are used to store seawater, which is left for evaporation
in the sun.
5) Shipwreck Beach, Lanai
6) Kaanapali Beach, West Maui: Kaanapali is one of Hawaii’s most famous
and popular beaches, located in West Maui, north of Lahaina. Numerous elegant
resort hotels, condos, and Hawaii villas border this beach. It is a three
miles long beach, ideal for activities and lifeguard-protected.
7) Wailea Beach, South Maui: Chosen as America’s best beach of 1999
by Dr. Beach, Wailea is located at the Grand Wailea and Four Seasons Resorts
in South Maui. The shores of this beach are less ‘punishing’ than
Wailea’s other beaches, and hence, Wailea offers an opportunity for
swimming, snorkeling in calm waters, and bodysurfing. The sandy bottom is
shallow inshore, slowly dropping off to deeper water.
8) Papohaku Beach, Molokai: Papohaku, one of the world's longest beaches,
is located on the west coast of Molokai. Marked by remote isolation, it is
quite usual to find sight of anyone for miles on this beach. If a private,
secluded and beautiful beach is what you are looking for, Papohaku is definitely
the beach for you.
9) Waikiki Beaches, Southern Shore, Oahu: The most famous ‘sand stretch’ in
the world is probably the seven beaches of Waikiki. Nearly 4 million people
visit these beaches every year, making it appear like wall-to-wall bodies,
but ‘people-watching’ is actually a fun ‘sport’.
In fact, Waikiki is the perfect place to learn surfing.
10) Waimanalo Beach Park, Windward Oahu: By far, Waimanalo is the most beautiful
beach on the Oahu island. For local families, it is a major weekend gathering
place, where the shaded areas near the beach are ideal for picnics and barbecues.
